  • How to make a Crystal necklace

    Crystal necklace project:

The most important technique for making this crystal necklace is to learn how to make a loop on a headpin, and attach it to the necklace chain. Once you can do this, you’ll be able to make many variations of this design. You might even be able to design your own unique necklace. Have fun!

    What you need:

    • 7 crystal beads (5mm), color of your choice
    • 4 crystal beads (4mm)
    • 1 Large crystal bead (10mm)
    • 5 Bali spacer beads
    • 3 small round spacer beads
    • headpins (I used 2 inch headpins)
    • 3 small round silver spacer beads
    • round nose pliers
    • wire or side cutters
    • chain necklace with links of 2mm at least

    Step 1:

Slide your beads onto your headpins in the following order:
Headpins 1 and 7: 5mm crystal bead followed by small round spacer bead.
Headpins 2 and 6: 4mm crystal bead, Bali bead, 4mm crystal bead.
Headpins 3 and 5: 5mm crystal bead, Bali bead, 5mm crystal bead.
Central headpin: 10mm crystal bead, Bali bead, 5mm crystal bead, small round spacer bead.

    Step 2:

This is definitely the most important step for this project. You will need to make a loop for each headpin as described on the page ‘headpin loop’.Ideally the loops are supposed to be more or less the same size. Don’t get discouraged if you’re a beginner and can’t get it right the first time. It will get easier after practicing it a few times.

    Step 3:

Open the loop of each headpin slightly with your round nose pliers to attach the chain. Try not to open it too wide, otherwise the round shape of the loop might be distorted.

    Step 4:

Find the exact center of your chain and attach the large crystal headpin onto the link of the chain.

    Step 5:

Use your round nose pliers to close the loop completely.

    Step 6:

Count on six links to the sides of the central headpin and attach headpins 3 and 5 (see step one).

    Step 7:

Again count on six links to both sides and attach headpins 2 and 6. Repeat the same process for the last two headpins (1 and 7). Well done, you've made your own beautiful crystal necklace.

  • How to make a beaded briolette necklace

How to make a beaded briolette necklace:

    how to make beaded necklace

This charming beaded briolette necklace is made using three wire techniques. The first technique that you will learn is how to make a briolette wrap. A briolette wrap is used when you work with top drilled beads like the pink crystal in this necklace. The other techniques that you will learn are how to make a wrapped loop on a headpin, and how to open and close jump rings properly.

You can add more charms or beads, or even use less if you want. Get yourself some stunning beads for this necklace, as the beads are the focal point of the necklace.

The circle link that I’ve used has a drilled hole on top, but you don’t need one with a hole because you can attach it with a jump ring.

It’s best to use chain with a ready fitted clasp for this project. I’ve used belcher chain with links of 5mm. See the necklace size guide for more information regarding necklace sizes.

    What you need:

    • 1 large briolette crystal bead (2½cm), color of your choice
    • 6 silver metal beads (5-7mm)
    • 4 small pearls
    • a silver charm
    • coin pearl or any other bead to fit your design
    • 2mm or 3mm silver spacer beads
    • thin headpins that will fit small pearls (usually 22 gauge or 24 gauge)
    • thicker headpins for the metal beads (20g)
    • 20 gauge silver wire (approximately 4-5”)
    • 3 jump rings (9mm)
    • 4 jump rings (7mm)
    • necklace chain with a ready fitted clasp (5mm links)
    • silver circle link
    • round nose pliers
    • chain or flat nose pliers
    • wire or side cutters
    • safety glasses (optional)

    Step 1:
Open a 7mm jump ring as described on the page how to open and close jump rings. Find the central link of your chain and slide it onto the jump ring, followed by a 9mm jump ring (make sure it’s closed properly). Close the jump ring the correct way.

    Step 2:
Attach two more 9mm jump rings.

    how to make beaded necklace

    Step 3:
Attach another 7mm jump ring, and slide the circle link onto the jump ring as well. Close it properly. If your circle link has a drilled hole, put the jump ring through the hole instead.

    Step 4:
Slide your beads onto the headpins. Use some of the small spacer beads if the holes are too big to hold the headpin.

    how to make beaded necklace

    Step 5:
Take your metal beads and make a loop for each headpin as described on the pageheadpin loop. Don’t make loops for the pearls yet, you are going to make wrapped loops for them.

    how to make beaded necklace

    Step 6:
Open the loop of each headpin with your round nose pliers. Try not to open it too wide otherwise the round shape of the loop might be distorted.

    how to make beaded necklace

Attach the metal beads to either side of the 9mm jump rings. Close the loops completely (using your round nose pliers) to prevent the beads from slipping off the jump rings.

    how to make beaded necklace

    Step 7:
You are going to make a wrapped loop for each pearl as described on the page wrapped headpin. Make sure you attach the open loops to the jump rings before wrapping it. I’ve made that mistake too many times! Attach a pearl to each jump ring as shown in the graphics below.

    Step 8:
Open a 7mm jump ring and slide your charm and circle link onto the jump ring. Close it completely.

    Step 9:
The next step is to make a briolette wrap for the crystal briolette. I've used 20g wire instead of 22g for this chunky beaded briolette necklace (feel free to use 22g wire). Follow the detailed descriptions on the page briolette wrap. You will have to make the loop big enough to slip the circle link onto it as shown in the photo below.

    Step 10:
This is the last step in making your beaded briolette necklace. Take the coin pearl on the headpin and make a wrapped loop for the headpin as described on the page wrapped headpin. You don’t need to attach anything to the loop while you're making it.

    how to make beaded necklace

Open the last 7mm jump ring and attach the coin pearl to the circle link on the other side of the crystal.

  • How to make a wrapped Y necklace

How to make a wrapped Y necklace:

    wrapped y necklace

This wrapped Y necklace is an elegant design that forms the shape of the letter Y. Pearls, gemstones and crystals look great in this design. You can even use a combination of different beads. I’ve used dark blue pearls and a Swarovski crystal heart for this necklace.

    What you need:
    • pearls of your choice
    • one Swarovski heart-shaped briolette bead
    • 22gauge (0.6mm) silver wire
    • toggle clasp and bar
    • belcher or curb chain with links of 2mm
    • 2 jump rings (3mm or 4mm)
    • round nose pliers
    • chain or flat nose pliers
    • wire or side cutters
    • safety glasses (optional)

    wrapped y necklace

    Step 1:
We are going to make the briolette wrap for the crystal heart first. Follow the detailed explanation for making a briolette wrap on the page briolette wrap. You can wrap the wire a bit further down the briolette for this wrapped y necklace design. It will look like the one in the photo below.

    how to make y necklace

    Step 2:
Cut off approx. 3-4” (10mm) of 22 gauge wire. You need this to make a wrapped loop for the pearl. Follow steps 1-3 on the page wrapped loop. Slide your briolette bead onto the open loop.

    how to make y necklace

    Step 3:
Grip the loop with your chain or flat nose pliers. Use your free hand to wrap the tail of the wire 2-3 times around the neck of the loop. Cut off the excess wire as close to the wrap as possible and press the end down with your chain nose pliers.

    Step 4:
Slide a pearl onto the wire. Grip the wire 2mm above the pearl with your round nose pliers, and make a loop as in step 2. Cut off 3 links of chain and slide it onto the open loop. Wrap the wire 2-3 times around the neck of the loop, and cut off the excess wire with your wire cutters.

    Step 5:
The rest of the necklace is just a repetition of the same technique. Add another wrapped pearl to the design. You don’t need to attach a chain for this step.

how to make wrapped y necklace

    Step 6:
To form the ‘Y’ shape for the wrapped Y necklace, attach 2 wrapped pearls to the loop on top. Remember to attach the chain to both pearls . I’ve made this mistake too many times!!

    Step 7:
Continue to add pearls (with chain attached to it) on both sides. Measure the necklace as you go along. Stop adding pearls when you have your necklace size minus 2” (5cm), because the toggle clasp and chain will measure approx. 2 inches. Do not wrap the last pearl on both sides, leave the loop open.

    Step 8:
Cut off 10 links of chain (x2). The reason for the 10 links is that it is quite difficult to fasten a toggle bar with a pearl attached close to it. Slide the chain onto the open loops at both ends.

    how to make y necklace

    Step 9:
This is the last step in making your wrapped Y necklace.

Open a jump ring with your chain and round nose pliers and slide the toggle clasp as well as the last link of the chain onto it. Close it the same way as you’ve opened it. Do the same for the toggle bar at the other end of your necklace.

Well done, your wrapped ‘Y’ necklace is now ready to wear.

  • How to knot pearls or restring pearls

How to knot pearls or restring pearls

    knot pearls

The best and easiest method for beginners learning to knot pearls is by using a beading awl (see photo below) or very thick needle. The beading awl or needle will assist you in making tight, consistent knots.

    knot pearls

It is important to use the correct silk thread for your pearls, as well as the right color to match your pearls. Griffin brand comes with a needle fixed to the cord which makes stringing your pearls easier.

What you need to knot pearls:

    • pearls of your choice
    • silver spacer beads that match the size of your pearls. The holes of these spacer beads must be more or less the same size as your pearls
    • 2 bead caps to fit your pearls
    • clasp and hook (I’ve used a toggle clasp and bar)
    • natural silk cord (see link above for the correct size)
    • beading awl or very thick needle
    • beading needle that matches your silk cord
    • 3cm (1 inch) bullion (french wire)
    • scissor or cutter

    1. Cut off 8mm bullion.

    knot pearls

    2. Most cords have a needle attached to it. Use it and slide the following to the end of your cord (leave at least 10cm cord left to work with at the other end of the cord): pearl, bead cap, bullion, toggle clasp.

    knot pearls

    3. String the short end of the cord back through the bead cap and pearl. You will have to attach your own beading needle to this end of the cord.

    knot pearls

    4. Tighten both sides of the cord so that the bullion forms a loop. The silk cord must not be visible in the loop.

    knot pearls

    5. Tie a knot next to the bead using both cords. You can do it without the beading awl (or thick needle). This will be used when you have only one cord left for knotting.

    knot pearls

    6. Slide another pearl onto both cords next to the knot. Make another knot with both cords. Slide a third pearl onto the cord, and trim the short end of the cord next to the pearl. You will now have only one cord left for knotting.

    knot pearls

    7. Make a knot next to the pearl, and place the beading awl (or thick needle) inside the loop of the knot as close to the pearl as possible. The beading awl will assist you in making tight, consistent knots between the pearls.

    knot pearls

    8. Tighten the knot while keeping the awl in place.

    knot pearls

    9. Release the awl if the knot is close enough to the pearl, and use your nails to tighten the knot.

    knot pearls

    10. You can even add a silver touch to your design by using silver beads between some of the pearls. If you are going to add silver beads or gemstones, lay out your design before stringing and knotting it.

    knot pearls

    11. Keep on knotting....and knotting....until you have only one pearl left to string.

    knot pearls

    12. String the last pearl, bead cap, 8mm bullion and toggle bar onto the silk cord.

    knot pearls

    13. Insert the needle back through the bead cap and pearl (not through the bullion and toggle bar). Pull the cord and tighten the loop until you can only see the bullion which forms the loop.

    knot pearls

    14. Make a knot as shown in the picture below. Pull the cord to tighten the knot. (The knot might look slightly bigger because of the double knot) Don’t cut the cord yet.

    knot pearls

    15. String the cord through the second pearl as well.

    knot pearls

    16. This is the last step in learning how to knot pearls. Make another knot at the end of the second pearl, and string the cord through the third pearl. Don’t make a knot, but use your scissors or cutters to trim the excess cord. Well done, now you know how to knot pearls!
